Transition services are available through the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities for students who have either completed their educational services or will be completing their educational services in the near future. The transition services entail consultation, guidance and planning with regard to adult life and the world of work. A transition specialist is available to assist students, parents, caregivers and school districts with regard to the available resources and how to access those resources. The transition specialist is also available to assist IEP teams with individualized education planning.
The TCBDD transition team also works in collaboration with the school districts in Trumbull County in preparing students for work by sending job coaches to assist with job training programs within the schools.
The transition team is also available to provide in-services in the areas of soft skills, expected work behavior and job exploration as well as community based work experiences.
Direct Link provides opportunities for job seekers to participate in volunteer activities and a job seeker boot camp. Volunteer activities give the student an opportunity to work in an actual work setting under the guidance of an experienced job coach. Job seeker boot camp gives the student the opportunity to learn about employer expectations, appropriate work behaviors, how to create a resume, how to complete a job application and how to prepare for an interview.
The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities provides additional transition services through the Community Integrated Training for Employment (CITE) program. The CITE program is a transition to work program that provides real life work experiences for students to better prepare them for transition into adulthood.
There are services available through other county and state programs as well. Click on the link buttons below to learn more:
The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities' community employment department (Direct Link) is starting to gear up for another year of Summer Youth Work Experience. Though summer is several months away, it is time to start thinking about and applying for summer work.
Direct Link's summer work program offers students an opportunity to work in various job capacities within the workforce. Students are supported by an on-the-job coach who is present to assist them in acquiring both the work skills and expected work behavior necessary to be successful in future employment. The students are paid at minimum wage and can work between 12 and 20 hours per week for 3 to 5 weeks, based on skill level and experience.
During the summer of 2022, Direct Link served 27 students in the Summer Youth Work Experience. The 27 students came from 13 school districts in Trumbull County. The job sites included Shepherd of the Valley (Howland), The U.S. Air Force Base in Vienna, The Trumbull County Board of DD administrative offices, Big Lots (Champion and Niles), Gordon Food Services in Niles, Fairhaven School and Creekside Gardens in Howland. The jobs included landscaping, housekeeping, stocking, cleaning, car washing, assembly, packaging, dishwashing and food prep.
Direct Link is looking forward to having many of these opportunities again this summer.
